Tips for Your Quest

1

Before You Go

Agree the list together before you leave home. Show them the cards, let them help pick what you need. When they've been part of the plan, they're part of the mission.

2

Arrange in Shop Order

Walk your usual route in your head and sort the cards to match - fruit first, then dairy, then snacks. Hand them the binder and let them lead.

3

Younger Explorers

Little ones in the trolley seat can still play - spot the colours, find the letter, say the sound. Under 2? Use the cards as traditional flashcards - point, name, repeat.

4

Start Small

Start with 5 cards or less and build up over time. No pressure - even one card is a win.

5

Give Them Their Own Trolley

Where possible, let them push their own. Instant buy-in, every time.

6

Try Quieter Days

Yes it'll take longer. But it'll be calm, fun and something they'll actually remember. No need to rush, this is bonding time.

7

Multiple Kids

Different ages, different challenges - older ones can budget and write prices, younger ones spot colours and letters. My 8 year old still loves them!

8

Use the Blank Cards

Missing an ingredient? Draw it on a blank card. Older kids can write item prices and total up their own receipt - a brilliant real-world maths challenge.

9

Beyond the Shop

Let them pick their cards, find the ingredients and prepare their own snacks. A little independence in the kitchen goes a long way.

10

Adults Use Them Too

Flick through before you shop so you don't forget anything. No judgement.

11

After Every Quest

Wipe your cards clean and pop them back in the box, ready for next time.

When Things Get Tricky

If It's Not in the Cards, We're Not Getting It

Yes, this is a real saying in our house. Feel free to steal it.

The cards aren't just a learning tool, they're a boundary. A calm, fun, non-negotiable one. Before you go in, agree the rule together: "We only get what's on our cards today." When they've helped choose the cards, they've already agreed to the list. You're not the villain, the cards are in charge.

But what if they still kick off?

Check timing first

A tired child and a supermarket is a recipe for chaos. If today's not the day, postpone.

Mid-tantrum is not the time to reason

Stay calm, acknowledge the feeling, don't negotiate. You're not failing, they're just little.

Acknowledge, then redirect

"I know you really want that. Let's see what's next on our cards." Keep moving.

Never let a tantrum change the answer

If you've said no, no amount of fury should change that. The cards are in charge.

Remove from the trigger

Physically move away from the aisle. Out of sight, back to the mission.

Keep the mission going

"How many cards do we have left? Let's find them!" Redirect back to the quest.

Consistency is everything

If it's not in the cards, it stays on the shelf. Every time. Kids learn fast.

After the storm, reconnect

A quick hug, "we got through that together" and move on. No lectures. Back to the quest.

If it's not in the cards, it's not meant to be.

We say this at home for everything now. Even my husband gets it.
